As September 13th passes by I wanted to reflect on one of
the most historic days in the Hip Hop culture.
On this day twenty years ago The Notorious B.I.G. dropped his highly
acclaimed debut album Ready To Die in
1994. On that same day in 1996, Tupac
Shakur was pronounced dead after being shot in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas. These two emcees hands down, have made the
biggest impact in Hip Hop and their music as timeless as it is can still be
heard in the clubs, on the radio, and constantly sampled in today’s music.
Biggie’s Ready To Die
was executively produced by Sean “Puffy” Combs and included mega-hits “Big
Poppa," “Juicy,” and “One More Chance”.
One might not realize this, but one of the most impressive feats of this
classic album is the fact that BIG made this album happen all by himself, with
the exception of a Method Man feature. Unfortunately,
BIG’s life was cut short and we never got to see this emcee reach his peak, but
that goes to show how “big” this emcee truly was.
Tupac Shakur’s life was also taken prematurely, however, his
music also still lives on. Tupac has
sold over 75 million records worldwide making him one of the most commercially
successful musicians of all-time. His
extensive catalog includes “Dear Mama,” “I Get Around," “Keep Ya Head Up," and
“I Ain’t Mad at Cha," just to name a few.
These two lyricists are arguably the most celebrated rappers
in the game and Hip Hop lost itself when we lost Tupac and Biggie. As the title of this article states September
13th is, ironically, one of the most historic days in Hip Hop and no other day
compares. Sometimes you have to take the
good with the bad and unfortunately that is what that this day in Hip Hop is
all about. No matter the end result,
September 13th is a day to celebrate. It’s
a day to celebrate the life and times of both Tupac Shakur and Christopher
Wallace.
Rest in peace Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. Your legacies live on.
